Oil-pulling involves swooshing two tablespoons of oil around your mouth for around twenty minutes, and pushing and pulling it through your teeth. Be sure to spit it into a trash can when you are done, as oil can clog your drain.
An added benefit of oil-pulling is that does not expose your teeth to any harsh ingredients that could erode tooth enamel.
Coconut and sunflower oil are not the only oils that can improve your oral health. A little Vitamin E oil rubbed directly on the surface will relieve inflamed gum tissue. It is also rich in antioxidants, which are easily absorbed and help regenerate healthy gum tissue.
4. Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide gets used in many whitening products, including whitening strips. Too much of it can irritate teeth and make them more sensitive, so it is important to moderate your use.
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching ingredient that kills the bacteria in your mouth. Try it as a mouthwash with 1.5% to 3% concentration for minimal side effects.
Two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide can be mixed with baking soda to make a toothpaste. Brush your teeth gently. Only use this solution a few times a week in order to avoid enamel erosion.
5. Baking Soda
Baking soda can be used once a day in the place of fluoride toothpaste. It will polish away surface stains and create an alkaline environment in your mouth that will prevent bacteria growth.
A baking soda toothpaste will remove stains more effectively than those without baking soda. You will see your teeth whiten gradually over time.
Baking soda can also be mixed with lemon or lime juice for a whitening treatment. Just mix a half a teaspoon of baking soda with half a teaspoon of lime or lemon juice, and let it sit on your teeth for about a minute before brushing it off.
You can also mix baking soda with apple cider vinegar or coconut oil for a whitening toothpaste.
