Going to the dentist doesn’t seem to be a pleasant experience for most people. You’ve got to show up to their white, sterilized lobby room, wait, sit in a chair next to pokey tools that look a tad like surgical instruments, have your mouth stuffed with fingers and metal objects, squint at a light shining in your face, and then come away from the entire ordeal with a funny taste in your mouth. Maybe you felt embarrassed that the dentist chastised you for cavities, or pointed out that you didn’t brush well. But, as a dentist, we’d like to remind you that these unpleasantries are important to keeping that set of teeth clean and healthy. You only get one adult set, and losing them is even more unpleasant than going to the dentist once every so often.

Why do these mean dentist people have to fill my cavities? Use instruments that whine in my ears and grind against my teeth? Take weird x-rays with those uncomfortable tabs? We know how unpleasant it is to lock your jaw open and sit while a masked person messes about with your mouth, but, these things are done for a reason, and it’s not just to make your teeth shiny and white!

When a dentist sticks a pointy hook-object inside your mouth and starts picking at your teeth, that is called scaling. Scaling, or deep cleaning, removes plaque, which is a buildup of bacteria against the corners and edges of your teeth. Plaque can cause gingivitis, and the word itself sounds disgusting for a reason. Gingivitis causes inflammation of the gums, and, if left alone, can progress to periodontitis, which escalates to cause nasty breath, constant metallic aftertaste, and possibly loose teeth. Polishing is a proactive treatment to prevent plaque from gathering on your teeth, allowing longer time away from the dentist, in combination with consistent brushing and flossing, before another round of scaling is needed. X-rays, though it might seem a bit sketchy when you have to wear what looks to be a bullet-proof vest before taking a dose of radiation, are paramount in diagnosing any possible issues with your mouth. If the dentist doesn’t know what’s wrong, he can’t do anything for you! X-rays with the dentist are far from dangerous, and we’d like to take the time to remind you that you are constantly being exposed to radiation, most of which coming from the Sun, and the precautions taken during an X-ray functions much like sunscreen before going to the beach.

With all that said, those dentist visits are there to prevent very nasty diseases. The white teeth is just an added bonus, but that dazzling smile is usually what people notice first. If neither of those are important to you, then maybe the notion of giving pleasant kisses is enough to get you enthusiastic, because they’re all linked to dental hygiene.
